Chasing No One

Senior commanders were itching for action. A colonel approached a landing spot near our mountain location in his personal Loach (small helicopter). The rotor wash down the nearby valley buffeted banana trees to expose their white leaf undersides. From a distance it appeared like a string of Vietnamese with white civilian hats moving up a trail. An excited (and pot high) radioman contacted the colonel directly, pointing out the situation and possible danger. The colonel got excited and kept sweeping lower thru the valley. This vastly multiplied the banana leaf Vietnamese, which got the radioman and the colonel ever more excited; “THEY’RE RIGHT UNDER YOU!!!” By now I’d reached the location and ascertained the situation, as now, finally, also had this CA, Pot head, (and goldbricking) radioman. (One of the Fisherman/Grenade/ Boat characters) You had to smirk though, as this cursing, frustrated officer flew off.

Waiting along a trail on patrol, two of my Southern boys cut a piece of tree root. The scent; Root Beer. It was an Asian Sassafras tree, recognizable from their Southern, US homeland. On another occasion, they pointed out a coarse web strung, twelve feet wide, spanning a trail high above us. “Watch.” A twig was thrown on the web and instantly a huge spider was on it; definitely a potential small bird killer. These backwoods boys were an asset with their observation and other woods wise skills. Moving through these hills had been preceded by many years of hunting, fishing and just plain living in their hills.
